The SGH Students’ Scientific Association of Finance and Macroeconomics invites you to the 13th Macroeconomic Congress - an annual conference dedicated to the most pressing economic challenges facing Poland and Europe. This year’s edition will take place on December 2 - 3 in the center of Warsaw, under the main theme: “Poland’s Place in Europe - Finance, Energy, Future.”

For over a decade, the Macroeconomic Congress has provided a unique platform for dialogue between academia, business, and public administration. Previous editions have featured distinguished guests such as Prof. Grzegorz W. Kołodko, Dr. Marek Dietl, and Prof. Steve Keen. Last year’s discussions covered topics including the EU’s common industrial policy, Poles’ savings behavior, and the future of the European capital market.

The previous edition attracted numerous participants and experts, including Agnieszka Chłoń-Domińczak (Vice-Rector of SGH), Grzegorz Orawiec (Ministry of Funds and Regional Policy), and Przemysław Barankiewicz (Finax, CFA Society Poland). This year’s debate will focus on strategic areas shaping Poland’s position in a rapidly changing Europe.

Public and Local Finance

The panel “Public Debt and Local Government Financing” will focus on reforming the local government revenue system, the sustainability of record-high budget surpluses, and the relationship between central and local finances. The discussion will explore whether the new public finance model strengthens the autonomy of local governments or shifts fiscal risks onto them.

Reserves and Financial System Stability

In the panel “Gold, Currencies, and Central Banks – Reserve Policy,” experts will analyze global shifts in central bank reserve structures, the growing importance of gold, and the role of the digital euro. The debate will examine whether the trend toward asset diversification represents a lasting transformation or a temporary response to geopolitical and inflationary uncertainty.

Energy and Independence

The discussion titled “Poland’s Resource and Energy Security – Independence and Transformation” will address the new architecture of energy security following the withdrawal from Russian resources. The focus will be on balancing resource independence, the

development of renewables, modernization of grid infrastructure, and maintaining system stability.

Polish Economy in the Region

The final panel, “Opportunities and Risks for Poland’s Economy in Central Europe,” will cover key factors shaping regional competitiveness: semiconductors and high-tech industries, critical raw materials, foreign investment, and innovation deficits. The debate will center on how to strengthen Poland’s economic resilience amid global tensions and industrial transformation.

The event will bring together academics, economists, and business practitioners, including Sebastian Roy (Economist at Bank Pekao S.A.), Piotr Napłoszek (Deputy Mayor of Konstancin-Jeziorna), and Marcin Klucznik (Senior Advisor for Global Economy at the Polish Economic Institute). The Congress remains committed to deepening economic understanding and inspiring reflection on the processes shaping the future of the economy.
