The management of knowledge workers - the challenge for modern organization

Work has changed during the last decades and now it is based on knowledge and information. The article aims at analysing the definition and characteristics of a new group of employees - knowledge workers encountered in the literature. The first part presents the definitions used in the literature, compares their mutual congruity and analyses various criteria applied to define knowledge workers: their characteristics, participation in knowledge processes and education. The second part is an attempt to explain what is the main reason that category of knowledge workers have appeared. The last part of article presents the challenges of management knowledge workers.
